Projects and workspace

Applies to: StablEdge 0.4.4 and later

StablEdge organizes chats by project. One project maps to one folder, and by default the Agent reads and writes files in that folder. In the Workspace you can place the chat area, the editor, the terminal, and the file panel side by side, and the layout is yours to decide.

Creating a project

In the sidebar select New project, then pick a tab by where the project lives:

TypeNotes
Local projectA folder on your computer. Select Choose folder to pick or create a folder.
SSH remoteA directory on a remote server. Pick an SSH connection first, then browse and select the Remote project directory.
  1. Choose the project structure: Single project or Multi-project linked group.
  2. Single project: once the location is set, fill in Project name, tick Initialize Git repository if you want one, and select Create project.
  3. Multi-project linked group: fill in Linked group name, pick member projects from the local or SSH projects you have registered and name the main project; you can write a one-line description of what each member is for, then select Create group. Chats in a linked group can reach every member project at the same time.
If you have no SSH connection yet, add and test one under Settings → Remote first.

The right-click menu on a project lets you rename it, pin it, or Delete project. Deleting a project only removes the project and its chats from StablEdge; the folders and files on disk are kept.

Managing chats

  • Under a project select New conversation. Chats can be tucked into a New group; groups support an icon and a color, and you can drag a chat into a group.
  • The right-click menu on a chat in the sidebar offers Reference in new chat, which brings that chat into a new one as reference.
  • You can press and hold a project to drag it into a different order.
  • The right-click menu on a chat tab offers Split up, Split down, Split left, and Split right, so you can push several chats along in several panes at once; a tab you no longer need can be Collapse this chat, tucked into a stack beside the search box.

Project files

The Project files panel shows the directory tree of the current project. Right-click a file or folder to:

  • New file, New folder;
  • Reveal in file manager, Open in integrated terminal;
  • Copy absolute path, Copy relative path;
  • Add to chat, Add to new chat, which hands the file to the Agent as an attachment.

Search in project supports case sensitivity, whole-word matching, regular expressions, and search by file name. When you need to replace in bulk, select Preview replace to check the result first, then Apply replace.

Editor

Click a file in the file panel or in a chat and it opens in the editor. Editor tabs come in four kinds: file, terminal, web page, and Subagent.

  • Split view: in a tab's menu select Split right or Split down; up to 4 splits are supported. After you Pin tab kinds to this split, new tabs of the ticked kinds open in this split.
  • Temporary preview: a file opened from a chat first shows as a temporary preview; when you want to keep it for longer, select Pin in editor.
  • Home: with no tabs open, the Workspace home shows; select Edit workspace home to maintain Frequently used sites and Quick actions.
  • Hold Ctrl and click a file path in a chat to open it straight in the editor.

Terminal

  • Select New terminal to open the integrated terminal, which by default uses the shell chosen under Settings → System → Default terminal. An SSH remote project opens a remote terminal.
  • The terminal's Command history searches the commands you have run and offers Insert into terminal.
  • Select output in the terminal and you can send it to the Agent as a reference.
  • By default the Agent cannot read terminals you opened yourself; when you need that, turn on Allow the Agent to read my terminal logs under Settings → Agent.

Adjusting the layout

The Workspace is made of four panes: files, the chat area, the editor, and the terminal.

  1. Select Layout in the Workspace top bar and choose a built-in preset: Office layout, Code layout, or Chat only.
  2. To customize, select Edit layout, drag a pane to any side of a target column to rearrange it, or hide the panes you do not need.
  3. When you are happy, select Save current custom layout and give it a name; after that you can switch to it straight from Layout.

Git status bar

Git features sit in the status bar at the bottom of the window: when the project is a Git repository, you can view and switch branches, commit, push and pull, and resolve conflicts there.

CI/CD has two entry points:

  • The CI/CD badge in the status bar, which needs a connection set up first under Settings › Remote › Code hosting accounts;
  • The CI/CD drawer at the top of the chat sidebar on the left.

Multiple windows and the Island

  • New window: select New window in the title bar; each window can open a project of its own, or choose Global (not linked to a project).
  • Island: select Island in the title bar and the main window collapses into a small ball on the desktop. Click the ball to expand the chat capsule, double-click to return to the full Workspace; when a reply arrives or something waits for your confirmation, a hint slides out beside the ball. Working directory, Island size, and Collapse when clicking outside are set under Settings → Island.
  • Closing the window: when you close the main window you can choose Minimize to tray or Quit outright, or fix one of them under Settings → System → When main window is closed.

Opening files and links

Paths, files, and web addresses in a reply can all be opened, choosing among built-in preview, the editor, VS Code, Office, or the system browser. Under Settings → Open with you can set a Default open with for each file type, or pick Choose another app… for one time.
